Baby to toddler is a big shift, as your little one becomes more independent they require different things to keep them happy and make your life as a parent easier.
This is why I have partnered up with the beautiful Tashaleigh who is also currently a toddler mum like myself, to chat about our must haves when it comes to having a toddler in the house. We have put together a list of our essential toddler items that we think will make your life a little easier.
Sippy cups – these come in different forms and it all depends on which one your child takes to. Either way the more independent they get the more they want to handle things on their own so a sippy cup that doesn’t leak when being tipped over or thrown around is definitely a must have! Ayaan loves his Tommee Tippee Straw cup, I have to say that thing is toddler proof. He has thrown it around so many times and yet it still lives to be his favourite haha.
Feeding bib – A long sleeve apron feeding bib is one of those things I didn’t know I needed until Ayaan started showing signs of self feeding. This is a very essential toddler must have, it will save you from the massive mess your toddler will make on themselves. We opted for the one by Nurture one. This fuss-free bib allows your baby to self-feed, encouraging development of hand-eye coordination and nurturing early food curiosity. The bib protects baby’s clothes, washes easily and dries in seconds. It also comes with a handy pouch for convenient storage and travel.
Lots of snacks – If you don’t have snacks around your home, in every spot possible then do you even have a toddler? Haha. Ayaan as a toddler is forever hungry, he has gotten so smart that he even knows where I hide them so will go open the cupboard and bring it to me when he wants something, which is like every 30mins lol! For snacks I like to try and keep healthy options so that I know he getting his fruits and veg in as well don’t feel guilty for bribing him with snacks 😉 my go to are happy family organics snacks or kiddyliscious too! With that is a super cute nifty toddler product that you can get which is a snack on the go tin, Vital baby have them and it avoids your toddler throwing his snacks on the floor. Food Pouches are also a must have for those toddler fussy days, Happy Family Organics and OrganiX have great options that are packed will all the nutrition your toddler needs.
Suction plate/bowls – as they start self feeding and exploring eating by themselves the last thing you want is the food on the floor. A suction plate is a good investment as it allows them to focus on what’s inside the plate rather them seeing a plate as a toy. I opted for a Munchkin suction bowls but Hipporoo Grippo Plate is also a great suction plate to use as it suctions to almost any surface and is a super cute feeding experience too becuase of its shape.
Nappy bin – If you didn’t get one of these when your little one was a baby then you definitely need to get your hands on one when they become a toddler. This is honestly the best investment from birth to have in your home. Obviously as your little one gets older and start eating more solids, the smells gets worse so to have a nappy bin is like dirty nappies don’t even exist in your home. The Tommee Tippee twist and click nappy bin is next level! We keep this one in Ayaans room, it works like a bomb and locks in all the smells. It is the only nappy bin that twists and wraps off each individual nappy to safely seal away germs and odours.
Changing mats – these are just as essential as nappy bins. The older they get the more active they get and the last thing you need is that mess ending up on your bed/carpet etc so I would say if not a baby essential it is definitely a toddler essential! Snuggletime has a great padded one which is quick drying and easy to wash!
Now walking shoes is an interesting one because every child is different but having a good shoe actually helps your toddler gain confidence to start walking. The shoe has to have enough grip, fit the foot quite snug, and be light, essentially it should aid to them feeling stable and not feel like they dragging something on their foot. I found that Crocs for kids really work, Ayaan started wearing crocs from 6 months old. They are also super easy to clean and have enough ventilation. Another great brand too is Footsies and Tootsies, their shoes have great quality and are super durable. Finding the right shoes to give your little one the confidence to start walking is really important and these are Tashaliegh and my top two picks:)
Lets talk toys…. It seems to be that toys that allow for pushing or pulling are a big win. It also aids in them walking if they are not already. Ayaan loves his push cart and can literally keep him busy for long periods of time, so I would definitely say its one toy you should definitely get for your toddler if you unsure what to buy. I also recently got him a popcorn popper by fisher price which was a hit!
For Bath time:
Bath toys – Bathing time can becomes a fun sensorial experience and can keep your toddler entertained for long period of time if you have a few essentials. Bath scoops as well any bath toys that squirt water are great. Munchkin have a really great selection so be sure to check them out!
Oh how I dread this time… just when you think your little one has stopped teething another one decided to pop out. I have been lucky in that Ayaan doesnt get a fever or rash but gets super cranky because of the pain. We do opt for Calpol or Panado to do the trick. However teething toys are still great to use for this time, make sure you pop them into the freezer before giving them to your tod.
For Sleep time:
Sleeping bag – for me this has become a recent development. Its something I didn’t think I needed, I started using the Tommee Tippee Grobag two weeks ago and wow what a difference it has made with Ayaans sleeping and my piece of mind. I don’t have to worry about Ayaan knocking off his blanket in the night or if he is feeling cold or tangled up in his blanket. Using this has allowed Ayaan to sleep better as he doesn’t get tangled in his blanket and his body temperature stays regulated.
Do you agree with our picks? Let us know what your go-to must-have toddler essential is:)
